The Joint Action Plan to Promote Racial Equality in Brazil and the U.S. (JAPER) Will Distribute Rosetta Stone Scholarships to Scholars, Researchers and Activists Working on Racial Equality and Brazil

JAPER, a bilateral agreement between the United States and Brazil, will distribute 300 language training scholarships to scholars, researchers and activists in the U.S.. The scholarships will facilitate Portuguese learning in the U.S.. They will be managed by Rosetta Stone, a world leader in online language courses and they will cover a one-year period.

Civil society participants in JAPER are preferred, along with individuals and organizations that work in the area of racial justice and have an articulable interest in comparative or collaborative work with counterparts in Brazil.

JAPER's language learning activities have been implemented thanks to a donation from the U.S. Embassy in Brazil and facilitated by the African American Policy Forum in the United States.

I – OBJECTIVES

a) Foster exchange and networking between scholars and organizations focused on racial equality in the United States and Brazil.

b) Promote the learning of Portuguese aimed at professional capacity building for scholars, researchers and NGO representatives working on racial equality.

c) Promote racial and gender equality in Brazil and the United States.


 

II - CRITERIA

 
a) This announcement is targeted at three categories of applicants:

●        Scholars whose research or teaching focuses on racial equality and who articulate a demonstrable interest in Brazil;

●        Individuals activists working specifically on issues related to racial equality with a demonstrable interest in comparative work in general or work in Brazil in particular;

●        NGO representatives working around issues or with groups, communities or constituencies related to racial equality and who have a demonstrable interest in Brazil.


c) Applicants must be 16 years old or older.

III – APPLICATION

Applicants should provide a completed application form (click here) by 12 AM on August 22, 2011. (Please fill the form entirely.)

IV – THE SELECTION PROCEDURE  

There will be a selection committee composed of the co-Chairs of the Civil Society Committee of JAPER.

These are the steps of the selection procedure:

1. Assessment of application documents: August 22-24, 2011

2. Publication of the list of selected applicants at www.raceequality.org: August 25, 2011

3. Distribution of materials by Rosetta Stone: September 1st, 2011 

V - RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Selected candidates should participate in and finish the language course. Lack of online participation for more than 15 days will lead to suspension of participation in the course.

  2. Applicants should have access to internet and computers, as this course is only offered online. 

  3. The management, design and methodology of the course will be exclusively the responsibility of Rosetta Stone.
